WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS – CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE

The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are. Imagine how much happier we would be, how much freer to be our true individual selves, if we didn’t have the weight of gender expectations.

My Thoughts:

A must read for everyone, doesn’t matter if you are new to the ideology of feminism or well versed. It is a perfect introductory book as well as a reminder that we still have a long way to go.

The author, very accurately, discusses the patriarchal mindset that still exists in our society. The experiences she recounts, most of us have either gone through personally or bear witness to at some point of our lives. Throughout this book, I kept saying to myself “thats is so right. I have seen this happen or it has happened to me. Why can’t more people understand? Why are we still facing these issues?” And the author rightly points out …

I often make the mistake of thinking that something that is obvious to me is just as obvious to everyone else.

There is a huge group of people, who still turn a blind eye to the reality of our society and believe…

I don’t see what you mean by things being different and harder for women. Maybe it was so in the past but not now. Everything is fine now for women.

Wake up my friend and smell the coffee!

The author makes many good points about the way society treats women and men differently. How the different expectations from women and men, further add to the gender divide. We all need to unlearn the gender concepts that have been embedded in us since the day we are born. We all need to speak up in even the ostensibly small situations.

So simply put… Feminism is believing the right to equality. So, unless you believe in inequality based on gender, guess what, you are a feminist!

So please read this book and hope it opens your eyes and ignites enough anger/passion in you against the injustice, that one day we can all proudly live in a feminist society!

Happy reading everybody!

Let me know what your thoughts about the book. 🙂
