THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME – LAURA DAVE

The Devil is in the Details.

This is my first book from Laura Dave and I can say for sure it did not disappoint.

any layers. There is the mystery of course why Owen disappeared, leaving only a cryptic message for Hannah (his wife) “Protect Her” (Bailey, his daughter). This story is like peeling the onion. It has so m

Then, there is the relationship between Owen and Hannah. Their true love for each other shines through the pages. Hannah had so many reasons to lose faith in Owen, but her undying love and faith kept her going.

I fell in love with Hannah from the very beginning. Her willingness to take a step back and not force herself on her step-daughter is so admiring. It takes true strength to actually do that. Her patience with Bailey, her loyalty for her family, her unconditional love are all what makes her an amazing mother, an amazing partner and an amazing human .

During the journey to finding answers, you see Hannah turning into a strong protective (step-)mother to Bailey. She takes control on the situation when all is falling apart in their world. Laura Dave did a fantastic job of depicting the emotional and growing relationship between Hannah and Bailey. How the relationship endured the worst and metamorphosed into one of mutual respect, trust, love and faith.

This is a slow paced book, but at the same time it keeps you hooked wanting for more. I did not lose interest even once. This book is as much about the journey to the truth as it is about the truth itself. I love the characters, I love the plot, I love the book as a whole.

The only reason I took 1/2 star out, was because I started this book with the expectation of thriller which is what I gauged from some of the reviews and genre listed. But I would classify it as a suspense and drama and not a thriller.

But a great book overall. I would highly recommend it.

Happy Reading!!

Synopsis:

We all have stories we never tell.
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her.

Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers: Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.
As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered; as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss; as a US Marshal and FBI agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.
Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth, together. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they are also building a new future. One neither Hannah nor Bailey could have anticipated.
