11/22/63 – STEPHEN KING

We never know which lives we influence, or when, or why.

My Thoughts:

This was my first book by Stephen King. I was a little intimidated by the size of the book and wondered if this 800 odd page novel will be able to hold my interest? And it didn’t disappoint.

I instantly felt in love with Jake Epping. He is a perfect balance of a skeptic and  a believer. That made his experience more relatable, almost real. I felt the struggle Jake had to go through to make a change he thought was for the better. The book kept me on my toes wondering if he will be able to do it. But,

“The past is obdurate.”

So I will leave it up to the readers to find out what Jake’s destiny entails.
The ending of the book stole my heart. It was not what I had hoped for or wanted. But it was an end that the story needed.

Humans were built to look back; that’s why we have that swivel joint in our necks”

As humans we want to control everything and given a chance would go back in time to change some of the choices made. But it is important to understand that choices made in the past are lessons for the future. If we take away the lessons, the future may not be as bright as one would expect and that is what this book explores.

A fun read overall. My first book in the time traveling genre and it has definitely set the benchmark very high for the books that follow in my reading list.

Happy reading everybody!

Let me know what your thoughts about the book. 🙂

Synopsis:

Life can turn on a dime—or stumble into the extraordinary, as it does for Jake Epping, a high school English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine. While grading essays by his GED students, Jake reads a gruesome, enthralling piece penned by janitor Harry Dunning: fifty years ago, Harry somehow survived his father’s sledgehammer slaughter of his entire family. Jake is blown away…but an even more bizarre secret comes to light when Jake’s friend Al, owner of the local diner, enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession—to prevent the Kennedy assassination. How? By stepping through a portal in the diner’s storeroom, and into the era of Ike and Elvis, of big American cars, sock hops, and cigarette smoke… Finding himself in warmhearted Jodie, Texas, Jake begins a new life. But all turns in the road lead to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald. The course of history is about to be rewritten…and become heart-stoppingly suspenseful.
